What is a UK Student Visa?

Before we talk about your family, let us first understand what a UK student visa is.

A UK student visa is a special ticket given by the UK government. This ticket gives you the legal right to live, study, and even work part-time in the UK. Thousands of students from Tamil Nadu go to the UK every year. They go there to study courses like B.Sc, M.Sc, MBA, and PhD.

The UK is an amazing country. It has some of the oldest and best colleges in the whole world. When you get a degree from the UK, it has a lot of value. Top companies will want to give you a good job. This is why studying in the UK is a big dream for many of our students. But when you travel so far, it is natural to want your family by your side.

Who is a Dependant in UK Visa Rules?

When we talk about taking your family with you, the official word the UK government uses is "Dependant". So, who exactly is a dependant?

According to the official UK visa rules, a dependant is:

  • Your husband or your wife: You must have a legal marriage certificate.
  • Your unmarried partner: Someone you have lived with like a husband or wife for at least 2 years.
  • Your children: Only children who are under 18 years old.

Very Important Note: You cannot take your mother, father, brother, sister, or grandparents on a student dependant visa. If your parents want to see you in the UK, they must apply for a normal visitor visa. A visitor visa allows them to stay for a short holiday, but they cannot live there permanently with you.

The Big Question: Can I Take My Family to the UK?

Now, we come to the main topic of this blog post. Can you take your family to the UK on a student visa?

The short and simple answer is: It depends on what you are going to study.

In the past, the rules were very simple. Almost anyone going for a Master's degree could take their family. But recently, things have changed. Starting from January 2024, the UK government made some strict new rules. They changed who can and cannot bring their family.

Do not worry, let me break down these new UK student visa rules for you so they are very easy to understand.

1. Who CAN Take Their Family to the UK?

You are allowed to take your husband, wife, or children with you if you fall into one of these two special groups:

  • Students studying a PhD or a Research Degree: If you are going to the UK to do a very high-level course like a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or a Master's degree that is completely based on research, you are very lucky! You can take your family with you. These courses usually take 3 to 4 years to finish. The UK government knows that you cannot live without your family for such a long time.
  • Government-Sponsored Students: Are you getting full money from the Indian government or the UK government to study? If a government is paying for your education and your course is longer than 6 months, you are allowed to take your family.

If you belong to group 1 or group 2, we at AKS Overseas Education will help you easily apply for your family's visa.

2. Who CANNOT Take Their Family to the UK?

This is the sad part of the new rules. Many students cannot take their families anymore. You CANNOT take your husband, wife, or children if you belong to these groups:

  • Undergraduate Students (Bachelor's Degree): If you just finished your 12th standard and you are going to the UK to study a Bachelor's degree like B.Sc, B.Com, B.A, or B.Tech, you cannot bring your family. You must go alone.
  • Taught Master's Students (MBA, M.Sc, M.A): This is the biggest change in the law. A "taught" Master's degree is a normal course where you sit in a classroom, listen to the teachers, and write final exams. Examples are MBA (Master of Business Administration), M.Sc (Master of Science), and M.A (Master of Arts).

If you are going to the UK for a 1-year or 2-year taught Master's course, you cannot take your family with you anymore.

Many students call our AKS Overseas Education office and ask, "Sir, I am going to study for an MBA in London. Can my wife come with me on a dependant visa?" Sadly, the answer is no. You must go by yourself.

Why Did the UK Government Change the Rules?

You might be asking, "Why did they change the rules?"

Well, in the last few years, a very large number of students from all over the world went to the UK. Because the old rules allowed families, many students brought their husbands, wives, and children. The UK is a small island. It became very difficult for the country to find enough rental houses and enough space in schools for all the new children.

To solve this problem, the UK government decided to reduce the number of people coming into the country. Every country changes its rules to protect its own cities. So, there is nothing to fear. We just need to follow the new plan.

Real-Life Examples to Make It Clear

Let me give you two simple examples to make sure you fully understand.

Example 1: Ramesh

Ramesh lives in Chennai. He got an offer to study a 1-year MBA degree at a university in the UK. He is married and has a 2-year-old son. Because an MBA is a taught Master's degree, Ramesh cannot take his wife and son with him. Ramesh has to go to the UK alone, finish his 1-year study, and then look for other visa options later.

Example 2: Priya

Priya lives in Madurai. She applied for a 3-year PhD in Science at a UK university. She is married. Because a PhD is a high-level research degree, Priya can take her husband with her to the UK. Her husband will get a dependant visa.

What Documents Do Dependants Need?

If you are going for a PhD or a research course, and you want to take your family, you need the correct papers. If your papers are wrong, the visa will be rejected.

Here is a simple list of what your family needs. At AKS Overseas Education, our team checks every single paper before applying so you are totally safe.

  1. Valid Passports: Your husband, wife, and children must all have their own valid passports.
  2. Proof of Real Relationship: The visa officers want to know your family is real. You must show a legal marriage certificate to prove your marriage. For your kids, you need their birth certificates with your names on them.
  3. TB Medical Test: Because we live in India, anyone going to the UK must take a Tuberculosis (TB) medical test. You need a clear TB certificate from an approved hospital.
  4. Financial Proof (Bank Money): You need to show bank statements proving you have enough money to take care of your family in the UK. This is the most important step!

How Much Money Do You Need to Show?

Let us talk about money. The UK government wants to be 100% sure that you have enough money to buy food, pay house rent, and live safely.

The UK is divided into two main areas when we talk about money: London (the capital city) and areas Outside London. London is much more costly to live in.

  • If you study inside London: You have to show extra money for your husband or wife, and extra money for every child, for up to 9 months.
  • If you study outside London: The rules are the same, but the amount of money you need to show is a little lower because rent is cheaper.

The 28-Day Golden Rule:

Here is a very strict rule. The money must stay in your bank account continuously for 28 days before you apply for the visa. If the money drops even by ten rupees on the 15th day, the visa officer will reject your application! At AKS Overseas Education, we guide our students step-by-step so they never make this mistake.

What Can Your Family Do in the UK?

If your family gets the dependant visa and travels to the UK with you, what is their life going to be like?

There is very good news! If your husband or wife goes with you on a dependant visa, the UK government allows them to work. They can work full-time in the UK. They can take almost any job they want. They can work in an IT office, a supermarket, a hospital, or a restaurant. The money they earn will help you pay for your monthly rent and food easily.

Also, if you bring your children and they are between 5 and 18 years old, they can study in government schools in the UK for free! The education in the UK is brilliant. Your children will learn excellent English and get world-class knowledge.

Life in the UK for Tamil Nadu Students

Many students worry about moving to a cold country. Let me tell you a secret: the UK is a wonderful place for South Indian students!

There is a very large Indian community in the UK. In almost every big city, you will easily find Indian grocery shops. You can buy all the spices you need. There are hundreds of South Indian restaurants selling amazing idli, dosa, and your favorite Hyderabadi or local style biryani!

There are beautiful temples, cultural groups, and friendly people. You will never feel alone. The weather is cold, but the houses and colleges have warm heaters inside. You will enjoy a safe, peaceful, and clean life.

Why Should You Still Choose the UK?

You might think, "If I cannot take my family for a Master's degree, why should I go to the UK?"

Even with the new rules, the UK is still the top choice for our students. Here are three big reasons why:

  1. Short Courses Save Time and Money: In India, a Master's degree takes 2 full years. In the UK, a Master's degree only takes 1 year! You save one whole year of your life and you save money on college fees.
  2. Post-Study Work Visa (PSW): This is the best part. After you pass your exams and finish your degree, the UK government gives you a Graduate Route Visa. This allows you to stay in the UK for 2 extra years to find a full-time job. If you do a PhD, you get 3 extra years! You can earn in British Pounds and get international experience.
  3. Bring Your Family Later: Once you get a good full-time job and move from a Student Visa to a Skilled Worker Visa, the rules change again. People on a Skilled Worker Visa can usually bring their families. So, you only have to make a small sacrifice for 1 year. Go alone, study hard, get a job, and then call your family!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Let me answer some common questions that students ask us in our office.

Question 1: I am applying for a 1-year M.Sc. Can my wife apply for a visitor visa and travel with me?

Answer: Yes, she can. Your wife can apply for a normal visitor visa to come and see you. But a visitor visa only lets her stay for a short time (maximum 6 months). She CANNOT work in the UK, and she cannot live there forever.

Question 2: What if my wife has a baby while we are in the UK?

Answer: If you have a baby in the UK, the baby does not get a British passport automatically. The baby will be an Indian citizen. You will need to apply for a dependant visa for your newborn baby so you can travel in and out of the country safely.

Question 3: Do I need to pay money to the UK hospital system?

Answer: Yes. When you apply for a visa that is longer than 6 months, you and your family have to pay an Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). Once you pay this, you can go to government hospitals in the UK for free if you get sick.

Question 4: Does AKS Overseas Education charge too much money for their help?

Answer: No! We believe in helping the youth of Tamil Nadu. We offer the best quality service at very fair and honest costs. You can always trust us to be open and clear.
