CAS to Visa: What to Do After You Get a UK Offer Letter

You did it! You checked your email, and there it is—an offer letter from a UK university. Take a deep breath and pat yourself on the back. Getting an offer letter is a huge win. Whether you are sitting in a cafe in Chennai, studying late at night in Coimbatore, or dreaming about your future from Madurai, this is the moment your hard work pays off.
But wait, what happens now?
If you think getting the offer letter means you can just pack your bags and book a flight to London, hold on a second! The journey is only half done. The road from getting your offer letter to actually holding your UK Student Visa can feel like a maze.
Do not worry. At AKS Overseas Education, we have helped thousands of students from Tamil Nadu make this journey smoothly. With over 15 years of experience in guiding students to study abroad in the UK, we know every single step, every common mistake, and every secret to making this process easy.
In this blog, we will walk you through exactly what to do next. No confusing words. No complex rules. Just a simple, easy-to-follow guide to take you from your offer letter to your UK student visa. Let’s get started!
Step 1: Read and Understand Your Offer Letter
The very first thing you need to do is read your offer letter carefully. Look closely, because offer letters come in two types: Conditional and Unconditional.
- Conditional Offer Letter: This means the university wants you, but you still need to meet a few conditions. For example, they might say, "You need to score at least 70% in your final degree exams," or "You need to pass the IELTS English test." Think of it like a promise: "We will give you the seat if you do this."
- Unconditional Offer Letter: This is the jackpot! It means you have met all their requirements. The seat is yours. You do not need to prove anything else about your studies.
What to do: If your letter is conditional, start working right away to meet those conditions. Submit your final mark sheets or English test scores to the university as soon as you have them. Once you do, they will change your letter to an Unconditional Offer.
Step 2: Accept the Offer and Pay the Deposit
Once you have your Unconditional Offer, you need to tell the university, "Yes, I am coming!"
Universities get thousands of applications. To lock your seat, you have to accept the offer online and pay a tuition fee deposit.
How much is the deposit? It depends on the university, but it is usually between £2,000 and £5,000. Do not panic; this is not an extra fee. This money gets taken out of your total first-year tuition fee. It is just an advance payment to show you are serious.
Insider Tip from AKS Overseas Education: Pay your deposit as early as you can. International bank transfers from India can sometimes take a few days to process. You do not want to miss any deadlines because of a slow bank transfer!
Step 3: Get Ready for the Magic Word – CAS
In the UK study abroad world, there is one word you will hear all the time: CAS.
CAS stands for Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.
What is it? It is actually not a physical paper document. It is a unique electronic reference number that the university gives you. You absolutely cannot apply for a UK Student Visa without a CAS number. It is your golden ticket.
How to get your CAS:
- Accept your unconditional offer.
- Pay your deposit.
- Fill out the pre-CAS form sent by the university (this is where you double-check that your name, passport details, and course details are 100% correct).
- Show the university your financial documents (we will talk about this in the next step).
Once the university is happy with everything, they will email you your CAS statement. Keep this email safe!
Step 4: The Money Game (Sorting Your Financial Documents)
This is the step where many students make mistakes. But since you are reading this guide by AKS Overseas Education, you are going to get it right the first time.
To get your CAS and your UK Visa, you must prove to the UK government that you have enough money to survive and pay for your studies.
How much money do you need to show? You need to show two things:
- Your remaining tuition fees for the first year (Total fee minus the deposit you already paid).
- Your living costs for 9 months.
The Famous 28-Day Rule: This is the most important rule. You cannot just borrow money from a friend, put it in your bank account today, and print the statement tomorrow. The UK government requires that the total money must be sitting in your bank account for 28 days in a row.
If the balance drops even by one rupee below the required amount on day 15, the 28-day clock starts all over again!
Acceptable accounts: Savings accounts, current accounts, or fixed deposits (FDs) in your name or your parents' names. If you are using an education loan, you need an official loan sanction letter from your bank.
Step 5: The Health Check (TB Test)
Because you are applying from India, the UK government wants to make sure you are healthy before you travel. You must take a Tuberculosis (TB) test.
Very Important: You cannot go to your local family doctor or a random clinic for this test. The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) department has a list of approved clinics.
For students in Tamil Nadu, there are approved hospitals in Chennai (like Apollo Hospitals). You need to book an appointment, take your passport, and get a chest x-ray.
If your chest x-ray is clear, the clinic will give you a TB Certificate. This certificate is valid for 6 months, and you must include it in your visa application.
Step 6: Apply for the UK Student Visa Online
You have your CAS number. You have your bank statements ready. You have your TB certificate. Now, it is time for the big boss level: the Visa Application.
You will apply online on the UK government website. Here is what happens during the online application:
- Fill the form: You will type in your personal details, passport info, parents' details, and your CAS number. Be very slow and careful here. One spelling mistake can cause a delay.
- Pay the IHS Fee: IHS stands for Immigration Health Surcharge. This is a fee you pay to use the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. By paying this, you get free medical checkups and hospital visits while you study in the UK. It costs around £776 per year of your course.
- Pay the Visa Fee: The standard UK student visa application fee is around £490.
Once you pay these fees online, your application is officially submitted! But you are not fully done yet.
Step 7: Book Your Biometrics Appointment
After submitting the online form, the website will take you to the VFS Global website. VFS is the company that handles the visa appointments in India.
You need to book a date and time to visit a VFS center. If you are in Tamil Nadu, the main VFS center is in Chennai.
What happens at VFS? Do not worry; it is not a scary interrogation room.
- They will scan all your original documents (Passport, degree certificates, CAS, bank statements, TB test).
- They will take your fingerprints.
- They will take a digital photograph of your face.
Sometimes, you might be asked to sit for a short video interview. A person from the UK will appear on a screen and ask you simple questions like: "Why did you choose this university?", "What is your course about?", and "What will you do after you graduate?"
At AKS Overseas Education, we train our students with mock interviews so they can answer these questions bravely and clearly.
Step 8: The Waiting Game
You went to VFS, gave your fingerprints, and handed over your passport. Now, the hardest part begins: waiting.
Usually, a standard UK student visa takes about 3 weeks (15 working days) to process.
If you are in a rush because your classes start soon, you can choose special services when you apply online:
- Priority Visa: Takes about 5 working days (costs extra).
- Super Priority Visa: Takes about 1 to 2 working days (costs a lot extra!).
You can track your application online. When a decision is made, VFS will email you to come and collect your passport, or they will send it to your house by courier.
Step 9: Your Visa is Here! Time to Fly
When you open the courier packet and see that shiny UK visa sticker in your passport, it is time to celebrate!
But before you pack your favorite snacks from home, remember a few final things:
- Check the Visa Details: Make sure your name, date of birth, and visa dates are correct on the sticker.
- Book Your Flight: Look for good student discounts on flights.
- Arrange Accommodation: Make sure your university hostel or private room is booked before you land.
- Pack Smart: It rains a lot in the UK, and it gets cold! Pack warm clothes, but also remember to take essential medicines and some ready-to-eat Indian food to help you settle in during the first week.
Why Try to Do It Alone?
Reading this blog makes the process look clear, but doing it in real life involves a lot of paperwork, strict deadlines, and sudden rule changes. One small mistake on your bank statement or visa form can lead to a visa rejection. And a visa rejection can waste your money and delay your dreams by a whole year.
That is why having an expert by your side is so important.
