PSW in UK After Study: How Long Can You Stay and Work Now?

Hello Future Achievers!

Are you dreaming of studying in the United Kingdom? Maybe you are picturing yourself walking through the beautiful, historic college campuses of London, Birmingham, or Edinburgh. As a study abroad expert with over 15 years of experience, I have helped thousands of students turn this exact dream into a wonderful reality.

Welcome to the official blog of AKS Overseas Education! We are your trusted education agency right here in Tamil Nadu. We specialise in helping students from our state fly to the UK for their higher studies. Today, I want to talk about one of the most exciting benefits of studying in the UK: the Post-Study Work Visa, commonly called the PSW Visa.

Many students and parents sit in my office and ask me every single day, "Sir, what happens after I finish my studies in the UK? Do I have to come back immediately? Can I stay back and work?"

The simple, happy answer is: Yes, you can stay and work! But the rules change sometimes, and it is very important to have the correct and latest information. Recently, the UK government announced some new updates for 2026 and 2027. In this detailed blog, I am going to explain everything you need to know about the UK PSW visa. I have written this in very simple English, just for you. No confusing legal words—just straight, clear facts.

Let us dive in and understand how you can build an amazing career in the UK after your studies!

What is the UK PSW Visa? (The Graduate Route)

First, let us understand what the PSW Visa actually means. In the UK, the official government name for this visa is the Graduate Route Visa. However, most students, parents, and education agents still simply call it the PSW (Post-Study Work) Visa.

When you go to the UK on a Student Visa, your main goal is to complete your university degree. Once your course is fully completed and you get your final results, your university sends a message to the UK government. They tell the government that you have successfully passed your exams. At this point, your Student Visa is almost over.

This is exactly where the PSW Visa comes in to help you. The PSW Visa is a special permission that allows you to stay in the UK to find a job, work full-time, or even start your own small business.

The biggest benefit? You do not need to have a job offer in your hand before you apply for this visa. You can get the visa first, and then you have plenty of time to attend interviews and find the perfect job for your career.

At AKS Overseas Education, we always tell our students that the PSW Visa is a golden ticket. It gives you the freedom to gain international work experience. Having UK work experience on your resume will make you stand out anywhere in the world when you apply for future jobs.

How Long Can You Stay and Work? (Important 2026 and 2027 Updates)

This is the most common question we get from students in Tamil Nadu. How many years can you actually stay in the UK after your graduation?

The duration of your visa depends on two main things: the type of degree you studied and when exactly you submit your visa application. Let me break this down for you so there is absolutely no confusion.

For Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Students

Right now, the rules are very generous. If you complete your Bachelor's degree (like B.Sc, B.E, or B.Com) or a Master's degree (like M.Sc, MA, or MBA) and apply for your PSW visa on or before December 31, 2026, you will get permission to stay and work for 2 full years.

However, there is a big change coming up that you must know about. If you apply for your PSW visa on or after January 1, 2027, the visa length for Bachelor's and Master's graduates will be reduced to 18 months (which is 1.5 years).

So, if you are planning to study in the UK soon, you need to keep this new timeline in your mind. Our team at AKS Overseas Education is always here to help you plan your study timeline perfectly so you get the maximum benefits. Even 18 months is a very good amount of time to find a great job and build your professional skills.

For PhD and Doctoral Students

If you are doing a high-level research degree, like a PhD, the rules are different and much better. The UK government wants to keep highly skilled researchers and scientists in their country. So, if you complete a PhD, your PSW Visa will be valid for 3 full years. This rule is not changing in 2027. It will happily stay as 3 years.

What Are the Rules to Apply? (Eligibility Checklist)

You cannot just get the PSW Visa automatically by magic. You must follow some strict rules to be eligible. Do not worry; as long as you are a good student who focuses on studies, these rules are very easy to follow.

Here is a simple checklist we share with all our students:

  • You Must Be Inside the UK: You cannot apply for the PSW Visa from India. You must be physically present inside the UK when you submit your application online.
  • You Must Hold a Valid Student Visa: When you apply, your current Student Visa must still be active. If you let your Student Visa expire, you will lose the chance to apply for the PSW Visa. Never wait until the last minute!
  • You Must Successfully Complete Your Course: You cannot apply if you dropped out of college or failed your exams. You must pass your degree. Also, your university must officially inform the UK Home Office (the UK government department for immigration) that you have successfully finished your studies. You have to wait for this official confirmation before you apply.
  • You Must Have Studied in the UK: To get this visa, you must have lived and studied in the UK for a certain amount of time. If your course was 12 months (like many UK Master's degrees), you must have spent that whole 12 months inside the UK. If your course was longer, you must have studied in the UK for at least 12 months.
  • No Need for a Sponsor: Normally, for work visas, you need a company to "sponsor" you. This means a company promises the government that they will give you a job. But for the PSW Visa, there is no sponsor needed. You are completely free to apply on your own.

The Step-by-Step Application Process

Many students get nervous when they hear about filling out visa applications. But honestly, the process is very smooth if you know exactly what to do. Here is how it works step-by-step:

Step 1: Wait for University Confirmation

After your final exams and project submissions, wait for your university to email you. They will confirm that they have told the Home Office about your successful completion. Do not apply before getting this email.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

You will need your current passport, your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) card if you have one, and your CAS number (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). This CAS number is the exact same number you used when you first applied for your Student Visa from India.

Step 3: Apply Online and Prove Your Identity

You have to apply on the official UK government website. You will also need to prove your identity. Most students can simply download a mobile app called "UK Immigration: ID Check" on their smartphone. You use the app to scan your face and your BRP card. It is very fast and easy!

Step 4: Pay the Required Fees

You have to pay the visa application fee and the health surcharge online using a debit or credit card.

Step 5: Wait for the Result

After you apply, you usually have to wait around 8 weeks to get a decision. During this waiting time, you must not leave the UK. If you travel outside the UK while your application is processing, your application will be cancelled immediately.

Let us Talk About the Costs (Money Matters)

Nothing in life is completely free, and visas are no exception! It is very important to know the costs so you and your parents can plan the finances properly from the beginning.

When you apply for the PSW in the UK, you have to pay two main fees:

1. The Visa Application Fee:

This is the charge for processing your application form. Right now, this fee is £937 (which is roughly 98,000 to 1 Lakh Indian Rupees, depending on the daily exchange rate).

2. The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS):

This is a very important fee. By paying this, you get full access to the UK's National Health Service (NHS). This means if you fall sick, get a fever, or need to visit a doctor, your medical treatment in government hospitals will be completely free, just like a UK citizen.

The cost for this health surcharge is £1,035 per year. So, if you are getting a 2-year visa, you will pay £2,070 upfront.

We know this sounds like a lot of money to pay at once, but having free healthcare in a foreign country gives you and your family total peace of mind. Plus, once you start working and earning in British Pounds, you will quickly earn this money back!

What You Can and Cannot Do on a PSW Visa

The PSW Visa gives you a lot of freedom to enjoy your life and career, but there are still some strict rules you must follow.

What You CAN Do:

  • Work any job: You can work as a software engineer, a marketing manager, a shop assistant, or a teacher. There are no restrictions on the type of work you choose to do.
  • Work full-time or part-time: You can work 40 hours a week or 20 hours a week. It is completely your choice.
  • Change jobs: If you do not like your boss or your company, you can quit and find a new job. You do not need to ask the government for permission to change jobs.
  • Start a business: If you have a brilliant idea, you can become an entrepreneur and start your own company in the UK.
  • Travel freely: You can travel back to Tamil Nadu to visit your family for holidays and go back to the UK easily.

What You CANNOT Do:

  • No Public Funds: You cannot ask the UK government for free money, unemployment benefits, or a government pension. You must earn your own money to support yourself.
  • No Professional Sports: You cannot work as a professional sportsperson or a sports coach.
  • No Extension: The PSW Visa is a one-time offer. When your 2 years (or 18 months) are over, you cannot extend this specific visa. You will have to switch to a different type of visa to stay longer.

Top Tips for Finding a Good Job During Your PSW

Finding a job in a new country can take time. But if you are smart, you will succeed! Here are some top tips I share with all my students:

  • Make a UK-Style CV: A resume in the UK looks different than a resume in India. They do not put photos or date of birth on their CVs. Keep it clean and focused on your skills.
  • Use professional networking: UK employers love professional networking. Make sure your profile looks professional and connect with people in your industry.
  • Apply Early: Do not wait until you get the visa to start looking for jobs. Start applying for jobs during the last few months of your college.
  • Practice English: Since you are representing yourself in the UK, speaking clear English will help you clear interviews easily.

Real-Life Example: From Tamil Nadu to London

Let me give you a small, real example to make this very clear.

Imagine a student named Arun from Chennai. Arun goes to the UK to study for a Master's degree in Computer Science. He studies hard for 12 months and passes all his exams.

After his results come out, Arun applies for the PSW Visa and gets it. Now, Arun has a full work visa to live in the UK. For the first two months, he works in a local coffee shop to pay his rent while attending technical interviews. In the third month, he gets a fantastic job as a Software Developer in a big IT company in London. He works there happily.

Because Arun has the PSW Visa, the IT company did not have to do any complex paperwork or pay extra fees to hire him. This made it very easy for Arun to get the job quickly!

What Happens After Your PSW Visa Ends? (Next Steps)

Remember, the PSW Visa is a temporary bridge. It gives you time to build your skills. But what happens when the time is up?

If you want to stay in the UK for a long time, bring your family, and eventually settle down there, you will need to switch to a Skilled Worker Visa.

During your PSW time, you must prove your talent to your employer. If your boss likes your hard work, their company will "sponsor" you for a Skilled Worker Visa before your PSW Visa expires. The Skilled Worker Visa can last for up to 5 years. After spending 5 years on a Skilled Worker Visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), which means you get permanent residency in the UK!

So, the PSW Visa is your first, very important stepping stone towards a long, successful life in the UK
