UK PSW Visa 2027: Will September 2026 Students Get 2 Years or 18 Months?

UK PSW Visa 2027: Will September 2026 Students Get 2 Years or 18 Months?

“I am planning to join a UK university in September 2026. Will I get a two-year PSW visa after my course?”

This is now a big question among students and parents in Tamil Nadu. You may have heard one person say two years and another say 18 months. Both can be correct, but they apply to different Graduate visa application dates.

Here is the short answer. Under the UK rules published as of 13 August 2026, most students who start a normal one-year master’s course in September 2026 should plan for an 18-month Graduate visa. This is because they will usually complete the course and apply for the Graduate visa in 2027.

Your September 2026 intake date does not decide the length of your PSW visa. The date on which you submit your Graduate visa application is the key date.

UK PSW Visa 2027: The Quick Answer

The official name of the PSW visa is the Graduate visa. The present UK rule says:

  • If you apply on or before 31 December 2026, the Graduate visa lasts for 2 years.
  • If you apply on or after 1 January 2027, it lasts for 18 months.
  • If you complete a PhD or another doctoral course, it lasts for 3 years.

Most September 2026 master’s students will finish their course and apply in 2027. For this reason, most will come under the 18-month rule.

This is the most important point to remember: the Graduate visa application date matters, not the course joining date.

What Is the UK PSW Visa?

PSW means post-study work. Students commonly use the name “PSW visa”, but the correct official name is the UK Graduate visa or Graduate route.

It allows an eligible international student to stay in the UK after successfully completing an eligible UK course. A job offer is not needed to apply. An employer also does not need to sponsor your Graduate visa application.

With this visa, you can work in most jobs, look for work, change jobs and be self-employed. However, you cannot work as a professional sportsperson, and you normally cannot claim public funds.

The Graduate visa gives you time to build work experience and search for a suitable career. But it does not promise a job, company sponsorship or permanent stay in the UK.

You cannot extend this visa. If you want to stay longer, you may be able to change to another visa, such as a Skilled Worker visa, if you meet the rules at that time.

What Changed in the UK Graduate Visa Rule for 2027?

For most bachelor’s and master’s graduates, the Graduate visa is being reduced from two years to 18 months. This new length applies to applications made on or after 1 January 2027.

The rule does not depend on when you received an offer or CAS, paid the fee, received the Student visa, travelled or started the course.

The following dates do not lock in a two-year Graduate visa:

  • University offer date
  • Fee payment date
  • CAS issue date
  • Student visa issue date
  • UK travel date
  • Course start date

The date that decides between two years and 18 months is the date of the valid Graduate visa application.

There is another important rule. You cannot simply apply early in December 2026 to get two years. First, you must successfully complete an eligible course. Your university must also tell the Home Office that you have completed it. Only then can you apply.

Will September 2026 Intake Students Get 2 Years or 18 Months?

For most students, the practical answer is 18 months.

Let us take a normal example. A student from Chennai joins a one-year MSc course in September 2026. The course ends around September 2027. The university checks the final result and reports successful completion after that. The student then applies for the Graduate visa in 2027.

Because the application is made after 1 January 2027, the visa would normally be granted for 18 months if the student meets all the rules.

Starting the course in 2026 does not keep the old two-year period. There is no published rule that protects every student who joined before January 2027.

Not every September 2026 student must get 18 months because course dates can differ. A person who completes an eligible course, receives the required university report and applies by 31 December 2026 can fall under the two-year period. This would be unusual for a normal one-year September 2026 master’s student.

Three Simple Examples That Explain the Rule

Example 1: Arun Starts a One-Year Master’s in September 2026

Arun joins an MSc course in September 2026. He completes it in 2027. His university reports his successful completion in 2027, and he applies for the Graduate visa after that.

Likely result: 18 months, because his application is made on or after 1 January 2027.

Example 2: Meena Completes Her Course in December 2026

Meena completes an eligible course in 2026. Her university reports this, and she makes a valid Graduate visa application on 31 December 2026.

Likely result: 2 years, because the application was submitted by the cut-off date. It does not matter if the decision arrives in 2027. Her visa starts from the date it is approved.

Example 3: Rahul Completes a PhD

Rahul completes a PhD and meets the Graduate visa rules. He applies in 2027.

Likely result: 3 years. The shorter 18-month period does not apply to a completed PhD or other doctoral qualification.

These examples show why the phrase “September 2026 intake PSW visa” can cause confusion. The intake tells you when study begins. It does not decide how long the Graduate visa will last.

When Can You Apply for the Graduate Visa?

You must follow the correct order. First, successfully complete your eligible course. Next, wait until your university has told the Home Office about your successful completion. Then submit the Graduate visa application while you are still in the UK and before your Student visa expires.

You do not have to wait for the graduation function or for a printed degree certificate. The key step is the university’s report to the Home Office.

You must be in the UK when you apply. You cannot return to Tamil Nadu and then make a fresh Graduate visa application from India.

Once you apply, a decision usually comes within eight weeks. You may stay in the UK while waiting. Do not travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man before a decision, because the application can be withdrawn.

Who Can Apply for the UK Graduate Visa?

In general, you need to:

  • Be in the UK when you apply
  • Have the required Student or Tier 4 permission
  • Successfully complete an eligible UK bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, PhD or another accepted course
  • Study with an approved education provider for the required period in the UK
  • Wait for the university to report successful completion
  • Apply before your Student visa ends
  • Not have received a Graduate visa before

For a course of 12 months or less, you normally need to study the full course in the UK. For a longer course, you normally need at least 12 months of UK study. Special cases can differ.

Is an 18-Month PSW Visa Still Useful?

Yes, it can still be useful. Eighteen months is enough time to gain UK work experience, understand the job market, build useful contacts and search for a role that suits your course and skills.

But six fewer months means you should not wait until graduation to think about work. A September 2026 student should begin career planning during the course.

Prepare a UK-style CV and professional networking profile. Attend career events, speak with the university careers team and learn which employers can sponsor suitable Skilled Worker roles.

The Graduate visa is not only a waiting period. It should be treated as a career-building period. Students who begin early will be in a better position than students who start searching only after getting the visa.

Final Answer: 2 Years or 18 Months?

The September 2026 intake does not automatically give students a two-year PSW visa.

Most students who begin a standard one-year master’s course in September 2026 will apply in 2027. Under the rules published as of 13 August 2026, they should plan for an 18-month Graduate visa.

A valid Graduate visa application made by 31 December 2026 falls under the two-year period. An application made from 1 January 2027 falls under the 18-month period. PhD and other doctoral graduates continue to receive three years.

Before making a final study decision, check the latest official UK rule, your exact course end date, your Student visa end date and your university’s completion reporting process.
