PSW in UK 2026: Graduate Route Rules Now and the 2027 Change

PSW in UK 2026: Graduate Route Rules Now and the 2027 Change

Hello future global students! If you are dreaming about studying in the United Kingdom, you are in the right place. Many students from Tamil Nadu have a big goal: to study in the UK, graduate, and then work there to gain international experience.

If this is your dream too, then you must have heard about the "PSW" or Post-Study Work visa. In the UK, the government officially calls this the "Graduate Route".

I have been working in the study abroad field for over 15 years. Every day, I talk to students and parents at AKS Overseas Education right here in Tamil Nadu. We help people study abroad, especially in the UK. Lately, the number one question everyone is asking me is: "What are the rules for the UK PSW visa in 2026, and what is this new change coming in 2027?"

There is a lot of news going around. Some of it is confusing. But do not worry! I am going to explain everything to you as if we are sitting face-to-face having a cup of filter coffee. I will make it so easy that even a 10th-grade student can understand exactly what is happening.

Let us look at the UK PSW rules for 2026 and the big changes planned for 2027.

What Exactly is the UK Graduate Route (PSW) Visa?

Before we talk about rules and changes, let us understand what this visa is.

Imagine you just finished your master's degree or bachelor's degree at a UK university. You have your certificates, and you are feeling very proud. Now, you want to find a job in the UK to get some real-world work experience.

But your student visa is about to expire. What do you do?

This is where the Graduate Route (PSW) visa comes in to save the day!

The PSW visa is a special permission given by the UK government. It allows international students to stay in the UK after they finish their studies. The best part? You do not need a job offer to apply for this visa.

Yes, you read that right. You do not need to find a company to sponsor you first. You can just apply for the visa, stay in the UK, and take your time to look for a job. You can work in any field, take up part-time jobs, or even start your own business.

This freedom is why Indian students, especially our students from Tamil Nadu, love the UK. It gives you time to build your career.

The Current Rules: UK PSW in 2026

Since you are planning to study in the UK soon, let us talk about the rules right now, as of 2026.

If you finish your course and apply for your Graduate visa on or before December 31, 2026, the old rules apply to you.

Here is what you get if you apply before the end of 2026:

  • Bachelor's Degree Graduates: You get to stay and work in the UK for 2 full years.
  • Master's Degree Graduates: You also get to stay and work in the UK for 2 full years.
  • PhD Graduates (Doctoral Degree): You get an amazing 3 full years to stay and work.

To get this 2-year visa in 2026, you just need to meet a few simple conditions:

  1. You must be inside the UK: You cannot go back to India and apply. You must apply while you are physically present in the UK.
  2. Valid Student Visa: You must have an active, valid UK student visa when you apply.
  3. Course Completion: You must have successfully passed your degree.
  4. University Confirmation: Your university must send a message to the UK Home Office (the government department) saying, "Yes, this student has successfully passed the course."

If you tick all these boxes and apply before the clock strikes midnight on December 31, 2026, you will get your 2-year work visa.

The Big Change: What Happens on January 1, 2027?

Now, let us talk about the big update. The UK government recently looked at their immigration system and decided to make some changes. They want to make sure that students who stay back find good, skilled jobs faster.

So, they announced a new rule that starts on January 1, 2027.

If you apply for your Graduate visa on or after January 1, 2027, the time you are allowed to stay will be shorter.

Here are the new rules for 2027:

  • Bachelor's Degree Graduates: The stay is reduced from 2 years to 18 months (1 year and 6 months).
  • Master's Degree Graduates: The stay is also reduced from 2 years to 18 months.
  • PhD Graduates: Good news here! PhD students are not affected. They will still get their 3 full years.

Why is the UK Government Doing This?

You might be wondering, "Why did they cut 6 months off the visa?"

The UK government explained that the Graduate visa was always meant to be a short "bridge" to help students move into regular, skilled jobs. They noticed that with 2 full years, some students were taking too long to find jobs that matched their degree level. By making it 18 months, the government wants to encourage students to focus hard, start applying for jobs early, and move into long-term skilled work faster.

Also, many other popular countries like Australia and Canada have been changing their rules too. The UK is simply adjusting its rules to match global trends.

How Does the 2027 Change Affect You? Let's Look at Examples!

Sometimes, reading dates can be confusing. Let me give you two real-life examples of students we help at AKS Overseas Education. This will make the rule crystal clear.

Example 1: Meet Rahul Rahul goes to the UK for a 1-year Master's degree in September 2025. He finishes all his exams and submits his final project by September 2026. His university tells the Home Office he has passed in October 2026. Rahul quickly applies for his Graduate visa in November 2026. Result: Because Rahul applied before December 31, 2026, he gets the full 2-year stay back visa!

Example 2: Meet Priya Priya goes to the UK for a 1-year Master's degree in January 2026. She finishes her studies by January 2027. Her university confirms she has passed in February 2027. Priya applies for her Graduate visa in February 2027. Result: Because Priya applied after January 1, 2027, she falls under the new rules. She will get an 18-month stay back visa.

The most important thing to remember is the date you apply for the visa, not the date your course started!

How Much Does the UK PSW Visa Cost?

Money is an important topic for every family planning for study abroad. The Graduate Route visa is not free. You have to pay the UK government to process your application and to let you use their hospitals.

When you are ready to apply, you need to pay for two things:

  1. The Application Fee: Right now, the fee to submit your visa form is £880.
  2. The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): This is a fee you pay so you can use the UK's National Health Service (NHS) if you get sick. The cost is £1,035 for every year you stay.

So, if you are getting the 18-month visa starting in 2027, you will pay the application fee of £880, plus the health surcharge for the time you stay. Always plan and save up for these costs while you are studying. We at AKS Overseas Education always help our students plan their budgets so there are no surprise shocks at the end of their course.

What Can You Do (and NOT Do) on a Graduate Visa?

The Graduate visa gives you a lot of freedom, but there are still a few rules you must follow. Let us break it down simply.

Things You CAN Do:

  • Work any job: You can work in an office, in a shop, or in a restaurant. You can work at any skill level while you search for your dream job.
  • Work full-time or part-time: It is totally up to you.
  • Be your own boss: You can start your own small business or work as a freelancer.
  • Look for work: You can spend your days giving interviews and applying to big companies.
  • Travel: You can leave the UK to visit your family in Tamil Nadu for a holiday, and then go back to the UK using the same visa.

Things You CANNOT Do:

  • You cannot work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach. (Sorry, no playing in the English Premier League on this visa!)
  • You cannot get public funds: This means you cannot ask the UK government for free money, benefits, or state pension. You must support yourself with your own job.
  • You cannot extend this visa: Once your 18 months (or 2 years) are over, you cannot ask for more time on the same visa. You must switch to a different visa, like the Skilled Worker visa, if you want to stay longer.

How to Apply for the Graduate Visa: A Quick Step-by-Step Guide

At AKS Overseas Education, we guide our students through this entire process. But just so you know, here is how simple the steps are:

  1. Finish your course: Study hard, pass your exams, and submit your final papers.
  2. Wait for the green light: Wait until your UK university sends an official email saying they have told the Home Office that you passed. Do not apply before this!
  3. Stay in the UK: Do not book a flight back to India yet. You must be inside the UK when you fill out the online form.
  4. Apply online: Go to the official UK government website. Fill out the application form. It is very straightforward.
  5. Prove your identity: You will usually use a smartphone app to scan your face and your passport.
  6. Pay the fees: Pay your application fee and your health surcharge online.
  7. Wait for the decision: It usually takes about 8 weeks to get an answer. During this waiting time, you can stay in the UK legally.

Why 18 Months is Still a Great Opportunity

When students hear that the visa is dropping from 2 years to 18 months in 2027, some get worried. They ask me, "Sir, is it still worth going to the UK?"

My answer is always a big, confident YES.

Here is why 18 months is still plenty of time:

  • It makes you focused: When you know you have 18 months, you will not waste time. You will start networking, building your resume, and attending job fairs right from your first semester.
  • Employers need your skills: The UK still has a shortage of skilled workers in many areas like IT, engineering, healthcare, and business management. If you have the right skills, companies will hire you quickly.
  • The end goal is the Skilled Worker Visa: The Graduate visa is just a stepping stone. Your real goal is to find a good company that will sponsor you for a Skilled Worker visa. You do not need 2 years to do this. A hardworking student can secure a good job within the first 6 to 8 months of graduating.
  • World-Class Education: The main reason you go to the UK is for the world-class education. A degree from the UK holds massive respect all over the world, including back here in India. That value never changes.
