UK Student Visa Interview: 15 Questions You May Face + Easy Answers

If you are applying for a UK Student visa, you might be asked to attend a short interview. Many students in Tamil Nadu call it the “UK student visa interview”, but the official name is often the UKVI credibility interview. This interview is mainly to check one simple thing: Are you a genuine student who is going to the UK to study?
Now breathe. This is not a “trap interview”. If your documents are correct and your answers are clear and honest, you can do well.
In this blog, AKS Overseas Education will walk you through 15 questions you may face, with easy answers, plus simple tips you can follow even if your English is basic.
Do all students get a UK student visa interview?
No. Not everyone gets an interview. UKVI may call some students for an interview during the Student visa process. If you are called, it does not always mean something is wrong. But it does mean you must prepare well and attend it properly.
Good to know: Many interviews are done in English and can be on video (often from a visa centre, or via an online video call).
What UKVI wants to check in the interview
UKVI usually checks these areas:
- Your course and university: Do you know what you are going to study and where?
- Your reason: Why UK, why this course, why this university?
- Your money plan: Who will pay, and how will you manage fees and living cost?
- Your future plan: What you will do after the course, and how it connects to your career.
- Your English: Can you speak and understand basic English for study?
Think of it like this: they want to see that your story is real, clear, and matches your visa file.
Before we go to questions: 5 simple rules to win the interview
1) Keep answers short and clear
You do not need big English. You need clear English.
2) Match your application details
Your answers should match your CAS, course name, intake month, university location, and fee details.
3) Do not memorise a “speech”
Many students try to learn answers word by word. That looks fake. Speak naturally.
4) Be honest about gaps or low marks
If you had a gap year, say the reason clearly. If your marks are average, explain what you improved.
5) Stay calm and polite
Even if the interviewer repeats a question, stay normal. They may repeat to check your clarity.

Simple practice plan for Tamil Nadu students (works fast)
Here is a super easy plan many students follow:
- Day 1: Learn your course name, university name, intake, and fees.
- Day 2: Write your “Why UK, Why course, Why university” in 4 lines each.
- Day 3: Speak answers loud for 20 minutes. Record your voice on phone.
- Day 4: Do a mock interview with a friend or counsellor.
- Day 5: Final review and relax.
Small tip: If you are nervous, speak slower. Slow English sounds clearer.
Common mistakes that cause trouble
These are the mistakes we see often in UK student visa interview preparation:
- Not knowing course details (course name, modules, duration)
- Giving answers that do not match the visa file
- Overacting, over smart answers, or memorised lines
- Saying “I will work full time” or focusing only on earning
- Not being clear about sponsor and money plan
- Missing the interview or joining late (very risky)
Quick document checklist (keep it ready)
UKVI lists core Student visa documents like passport and CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). Also keep these ready for your own confidence during interview:
- Passport
- CAS details (course, fees, start date)
- Offer letter (if you have it)
- Tuition fee payment proof (if paid)
- Bank / sponsor documents (as applicable)
- Education certificates (10th, 12th, degree)
- English test details (IELTS / other, if used)
You may not be asked to show everything in the interview, but knowing your file well helps you answer smoothly.
